Music Lessons with a Side of Empathy and Connection!

Salutations! Music Lessons in the Dallas- Fort Worth Area (DFW) just got a little more out of the ordinary! In our opinion, music lessons aren’t just about the music. They’re never just about the music with Garrett. Our style goes beyond the music because, believe it or not, taking up an instrument can teach you many skills. Communication, leadership, problem-solving, and empathy are only a few of the skills you’ll learn with Garrett. There are plenty of teachers and schools that teach notes, techniques, and chords, but very few teach the equally important skills that go along with being a self-reliant, competent musician.

Students in Garrett’s Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) in-person studio and online studio go on to do great and impactful things with their music and other talents. From becoming band leaders to music teachers and music majors to taking on additional leadership roles in school and other extracurriculars, taking music with Garrett has an impact on students that lasts a lifetime. The skills they learn through music are applied everywhere else in their lives. Not only are artistry and self-expression taught, but self-reliance, task initiation, time management, and other executive functioning skills that students in this day and age need to succeed and be a cut above the rest. These are the qualities of a leader, forged and molded behind strings or keys.

“My son, Jameson, recently began mandolin lessons with Garrett. Each session, Jameson is excited to go and comes home wanting to share what he learned. Garrett does a wonderful job with encouragement and instruction. This combination makes for an extremely positive learning environment! With Mr. McNutt’s guidance, he was able to jump right in and begin. Jameson is proud of his progress thus far. We are thankful for the lessons and look forward to hearing more music!”

“Mr. Garrett is AMAZING. I know it was overwhelmingly perfect when my 13 yr old finishes class with a smile on her face and saying ‘that was awesome.’ Mr. Garrett was friendly, energetic and super professional. He was able to meet my daughter at her current level and didn't waste a minute readjusting his original plans in order to accommodate her needs. He is experienced with music and with teaching; he was able to pull up music and instructions instantly for classroom use. His classroom is impressive with musical equipment, technology and an overall musical vibe. We couldn't be more impressed with him or recommend him high enough. If you haven't taken a class with Mr. Garrett, you are missing out!”

Mr Garrett is phenomenal. He is passionate about music and conveys this to his class. He meets the students exactly where they are at and easily adjusts throughout the class to keep pace with them. My daughter has gained amazing confidence in her playing because of him! His love for music making is contagious and we are so happy to have found him. You MUST try this teacher!

“You would be lucky to have Garrett teach your child. My son now has a growing skill and a direction he wants to take in life. We are certain it was initiated and fanned by Garrett's teaching. Seeing that spark in our son and encouraging it to grow has changed his life. There is nothing more impactful you could do for your child than to have a dedicated and caring teacher like Garrett nurture their own inner musician.”

Those who can do and those who can’t teach? AS IF!

As a musician, Garret has played in multiple bands (often more than one and even more than one simultaneously) in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, as well as various ensembles and orchestras across Texas and New Mexico. Not only this but as an Irish tenor banjo player, Garrett has played aboard cruise ships with some of the most talented folk musicians on this side of Belfast! He knows what it takes to be an excellent non-verbal communicator and ensure the music groovin’ and rockin’.

He also has a single up on Spotify, The Waltz of the Little Raccoons, and is working on the rest of the EP Sins of the Woodland Creatures, which he hopes to finish before his son, Sean, is born.

In addition to teaching lessons AND teaching music full time, Garrett has written a ukulele curriculum, Ukulele Unleashed, that gets kids plucking faster than ever before. He’s also created the FIRST (that he knows of) musical deck builder card game, Battle of the Bards, to be played alongside Ukulele Unleashed! You can also keep up with his thoughts, practice advice, and more in the blog on this site.
